Kopin Showcases Breakthrough Low-Power, High-Density Display Technology at SID 2009

TAUNTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jun. 1, 2009-- Kopin® Corporation (NASDAQ: KOPN), the leader in microdisplays for consumer and military applications, will showcase its newest high-resolution, low-power displays in an ultra-small form factor at the SID (Society for Information Display) 2009 Exhibition. The event takes place June 2 " 4 at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center inSan Antonio, Texas. The highlight of the Kopin exhibit is the new CyberDisplay® XGA LVS display with a full-color 1024 x 768 resolution in a size smaller than a U.S. quarter. The high-resolution images shown in the tiny microdisplay can be magnified by optics to provide large cinema-like pictures.

"We have achieved major engineering and scientific breakthroughs to improve power efficiency and further reduce the size of our displays," said Dr. Boryeu Tsaur, Kopin's Executive Vice President in charge of display products. "Our newest AMLCD advances allow the displays to consume less than 30 mW at full video rates " even for high-resolution XGA and SXGA displays. We have now reduced our color dot size to 3.75 x 11.25 µm, the smallest size in the world for the transmissive liquid crystal displays, and we believe it can be further reduced. We are now actively developing a 2048 x 2048-resolution display in a size smaller than a typical postage stamp."

New displays and modules being shown at Kopin's booth (#646) include:

  • CyberDisplay® XGA LVS display with a 0.57-inch-diagonal size, which is the smallest XGA display in the world. This display has the 3.75 x 11.25 µm color dots. It is targeted at emerging high-end applications such as virtual reality and 3D HD gaming. The CyberDisplay XGA LVS display is driven by Kopin's A251 driver ASIC.
  • CyberDisplay VGA LVS display with a 640 x 480 full-color resolution has a 0.35"diagonal size, substantially smaller than the 0.44"diagonal size for Kopin's existing VGA display. The display is targeted for lower cost, slimmer video eyewear. This display also has the same color dots as the XGA display. The CyberDisplay VGA LVS display is driven by Kopin's A912 driver ASIC.
  • BDM®-308K: The BDM-308K is an ultra-compact binocular display module with a 16:9-format 432 x 240 resolution to provide a wide-screen TV viewing experience (a virtual 40"TV screen viewed from a distance of 7 feet). The BDM-308K includes two CyberDisplay WQVGA LV displays, advanced LED backlights, and a pair of specially designed 27º field-of-view optics with large eye relief (20 mm) and pupil size (10 mm). The displays are precisely aligned to the optics and to each other for viewing comfort. The BDM-308K is a plug and play system, which offers manufacturers a fast and easy way to design and bring new video eyewear products to the market.

"What OEMs expect from us is high-quality imaging solutions " and we deliver,"said Kopin President and Chief Executive Officer Dr. John C.C. Fan. "In addition to the high-performance displays, we offer a full range of advanced backlights, drive electronics, optics, display modules and assemblies in particle-free packaging. Our broad product offering, combined with our high-volume production capabilities and strong financial position, is essential to supporting the mobile imaging market. Now that we have reduced the HD TV to a size smaller than a quarter and made it hundreds of times more energy efficient, ultra-portable multi-media devices are becoming a reality."

In addition to Kopin's displays and BDM, products from the Company's customers (Myvu, Vuzix and Wild Planet) will be demonstrated at Kopin's booth.
