Kopin Celebrates 25 Years of Technology Innovation with Anniversary Event at Gillette Stadium

TAUNTON, Mass., Apr 27, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) --Kopin(R) Corporation (NASDAQ: KOPN), the largest U.S. manufacturer of displays for consumer, industrial and military applications and the world's leading producer of heterojunction bipolar transistors (HBT) for smart phone and other mobile devices, today announced the details of its 25th anniversary celebration, taking place on April 28 at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts.

The event is expected to be attended by about 300 people, including guests, media, Kopin's customers, suppliers and employees. It will feature keynote speeches by three prominent professors and demonstrations of Kopin's newest technologies. A major highlight will be the unveiling of the world's smallest color WVGA (854 x 480 resolution) liquid crystal display (LCD) of only 0.32 inch diagonal. The beautiful images from these ultra-dense displays will be shown in several 3D video eyewear reference designs, also to be unveiled for the first time. Some of these models will be demonstrated at Kopin's Annual Meeting the following day in Boston.

"Kopin was spun off from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the 1980s with the goal of developing electronic products using the nanotechnology developed at MIT to improve the way people see, hear and communicate," said Dr. John C.C. Fan, Kopin's founder, president and CEO. "Over the past 25 years, our III-V transistors have been integrated into billions of cell phones and our CyberDisplay(R) LCDs into millions of consumer electronics and thermal weapon sights. In the years ahead, we believe that 3D video eyewear with our super-compact displays will set the standard for the mobile viewing experience, and our innovative Golden-i concept, complete with hands-free, voice and gesture commands, will alter the landscape for mobile computing and content access. Our III-V products enhance the wireless communication, and our miniature high-resolution displays are the logical terminals for the mobile devices."

The speakers for the 25th anniversary event include:

  • Professor Willy Shih of Harvard Business School, who will give a talk titled, "25 Years is a Very Long Time: Changing Faces of Innovation"
  • Professor Jagdish Narayan, The John C.C. Fan Family Distinguished Chair in Materials Science at North Carolina State University, who will speak on "Nanotechnology for the Next Generation"
  • Professor Paul Zavracky, Dean of School of Technical Entrepreneurship at Northeastern University, who will discuss "Invention and Innovation: Insight from the Early Kopin Years"

Kopin also will feature its newest technologies, including:

  • 3-D video eyewear reference designs showcasing three concepts: goggle-style and headset-style eyewear units, which are connected to Apple's iPod Touch, and an all-in-one eyewear unit with video input from SD card without the need to connect to an external device. All of the reference designs incorporate the world's smallest 0.32"-diagonal WVGA AMLCDs with color dot size of only 2.8 x 8.4 um, which is about 45 percent smaller than Kopin's new "shrink" VGA and WVGA displays, which began volume production this month. Volume production of this new ultra-compact 0.32"-diagonal display is scheduled to begin in 2011.
  • Golden-i - a revolutionary new concept in hands-free mobile computing. Golden-i combines a 3-ounce Bluetooth headset computer with a near-eye, 15-inch virtual display. Using natural speech recognition and gesture sensing, it provides users with hands-free, spontaneous wireless access to virtually any information in the world - including digital information, Internet services and broadcast programming, including real-time, full-color high-resolution streaming video. Users of the Golden-i device can control as many as seven independent devices or networks simultaneously - PCs, mobile phones, company servers and more.
  • New custom eyepiece solutions based upon the new CyberDisplay(R) 640M LVR microdisplay, an ultra-low-power active matrix liquid crystal display (AMLCD) with near instant-on capability. This standard eyepiece product has been fully qualified in the U.S. Army's Thermal Weapon Sight Bridge (TWS-IIB) program on an array of weapons.
  • HBT and Bi-HEMT product wafers that serve as the foundation for advanced power amplifier (PA) circuits, utilized in not only today's leading cell phones and Smartphones but in a wide variety of other wireless devices such as eBooks, Tablet PCs, mobile Internet devices and Smart Meters

At the event, Kopin will present a $20,000 donation each to the police department and fire department of Taunton, Massachusetts, home to Kopin's headquarters and manufacturing facilities.
