Kopin Showcases Industry Uses of Golden-iTM Hands-Free Mobile Computing Device at CTIA Wireless 2010

03/31/2010

TAUNTON, Mass., Mar 31, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) --Kopin(R) Corporation (Nasdaq: KOPN), the largest U.S. manufacturer of micro-displays for consumer, industrial and military applications, recently showcased multiple industry uses of its Golden-i headset at CTIA Wireless 2010 Conference in Las Vegas, March 23-25. As the first hands-free mobile computing experience that enables the orchestration of multiple devices through cloud computing, Golden-i allows businesses to significantly improve safety, productivity, and efficiency of their workforce.

Golden-i is a lightweight (three to six ounce) Bluetooth/WiFi headset with a near-eye, 15-inch virtual PC display. Using speech recognition and gesture sensing, it provides users with hands-free access via wireless connection to virtually any information in the world, including digital information, Internet services and broadcast programming such as real-time, full-color high-resolution streaming video.

Users of the Golden-i device, whose form-factor design was led by Motorola, can control as many as seven independent devices or networks simultaneously - PCs, mobile phones, company servers and more - in multiple languages, including English, French, German, Spanish, and Mandarin. For example, Golden-i users can wake up a remote hibernating Microsoft Windows 7 PC, immediately see their PC desktop screen and use speech recognition to access all of the PC's applications, data files and services. When finished, the PC can be placed back in hibernation with just one spoken command.

"Imagine a construction worker viewing the blueprints of a building while on-site, or a medical technician quickly pulling up a patient's file while in the emergency room, or even a utility worker accessing schematics of a street's electrical system - all completely hands-free and wirelessly," said Jeffrey Jacobsen, Kopin Senior Advisor to CEO and Golden-i Program Manager. "The possibilities are endless."

"Increasingly, companies are relying on field service technicians to deliver measurable value to the customer," said James Brehm, Senior Consultant, Mobility and the Unwired Experience, Frost & Sullivan. "Often times this requires real time access to customer records, scheduling, dispatch, service order and contracts management, service parts management, reporting and other software tools. By providing field staff with a lightweight, ruggedized, and easy-to-use tool such as Kopin's Golden-i, accessing and managing this data from the field becomes as easy as looking ahead into the wearable display and speaking commands. This allows field staff to keep their hands free for more important tasks."

Kopin has been working with leading technology companies to develop Golden-i: Motorola, Microsoft, Texas Instruments, MuRata Electronics, Nuance Communications, Stonestreet One, Mistral Solutions, Ittiam Software, Aurisound, Adeneo Embedded, Hillcrest Labs, Micron Semiconductor and Ikanos.

"We are working with Kopin to research and identify new business opportunities in wearable computing," said Tom Bianculli, Emerging Business, Chief Technology Office, Motorola Enterprise Mobility Solutions business. "As the leader in the enterprise mobile computing space, Motorola is always looking for opportunities to help our customers gain a competitive advantage and make their mobile workforce more productive."

Kopin recently made available Golden-i developer kits, which come with a complete, open-access SDK that gives end-users the option of developing their own software to either operate on Golden-i units directly or remotely running on PCs, industrial equipment or other devices. The kit makes it easy to develop highly intelligent applications that provide the Golden-i wearer with information from, and control of, virtually any "connected" device on the planet.

Demonstrations of the device were given at the Motorola booth at CTIA Wireless 2010. For more information about Golden-i, visit http://www.kopin.com/golden-i/.
