Director of Business Development

REPORTS TO: VP, Business Development, or SVP, Business Development & Strategy
LOCATION: East Coast preferred, but flexible

GENERAL FUNCTION:

The Director of Business Development will mine, develop and capture business opportunities within assigned market segments.  The Director will identify, nurture, develop and execute capture plans, and close external business opportunities and internally, conduct technical briefings, evaluate display system architectural trades, and lead proposal teams.


JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Find and evaluate business opportunities that fit with the Company’s capabilities and strategy
  • Develop winning, profitable proposals that align with the Company’s capabilities and strategies
  • Lead the creation of proposals to capture new program and product opportunities  
  • Generate and present technical briefings to the customer
  • Provide a sound understanding of micro-display based system architectures and functions
  • Provide market-driven inputs to shape demonstration and prototype hardware development
  • Support internal R&D program strategy and direction
  • Demonstrates knowledge of, and supports, Kopin’s mission, vision, value statements, standards, policies and procedures, confidentiality standards, and the code of ethical behavior
  • Lead and motivate employees and teams across multiple departments and in multiple locations to achieve business goals and objectives
  • Approximately 50% travel required

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Education: Bachelor’s degree in electrical, optical, or mechanical engineering or in a related discipline is required. Master’s degree is preferred.

Experience:

  • Kopin is a defense contractor and is subject to International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). You must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident (green card holder) to be considered for this position.
  • 5 to 8 years’ experience in a business development or operational leadership role with a manufacturing company
  • 2 to 5 years’ experience in an engineering role, must have taken a product through its full life cycle
  • Minimum five years of experience with government contracting
  • Experience interfacing with major DOD prime contractors and familiarity with defense equipment product development
  • Contribute to strategy development and execution
  • Outstanding leadership skills
  • Broad business acumen and financial skills, including good planning and budgeting abilities
  • Proven performer who can balance multiple priorities and work collaboratively to deliver measurable results
  • A strong bias for action and results are necessary

Technical Knowledge:

  • Display/Micro-display and Optical Systems Design & Performance
  • Night Vision Equipment Design & Performance
  • Thermal Imaging System Design & Performance
  • Basic understanding of International Traffic in Arms Regulations

Software Knowledge:

  • Must be proficient in the following software:
  • Microsoft Word
  • Microsoft Excel
  • Microsoft Project
  • Microsoft PowerPoint

Travel:

  • Regular travel to customers sites
  • Travel as required to Kopin headquarters in Massachusetts and to other Kopin facilities

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Work is performed in an office environment, whether on-site or remotely, and requires the ability to operate standard office equipment. Must have the ability to lift and small carry parcels, packages, and other items, walk short distances, and gown according to clean room protocols as required. Ability to travel.
